Retro Review: The Mummy Book/Movie

Hey, here's a new form of review I've got, called the retro review. It's where I post a review that I wrote in the past. It's so that you can see how much I've improved in my writing. The following is a review of The Mummy, written in fall 2001.

The Mummy
Review

The Mummy (1999)
Directed by Stephen Sommers
Novel by Max Allan Collins
Starring: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Oded Fehr

Storyline
Back in ancient Egypt, the High Priest Imhotep betrayed the Pharaoh Seti I by sleeping with his mistress and killing him. Because of this, Imhotep was cursed to forever be the undead.
Fast-forward to the 1920s. When his garrison discovers the ancient hidden city of Hamunapta, Rick O’Connell travels with them, dreams of wealth dancing in his head. Unfortunately, desert warriors intent on keeping people away attack the men, and Rick is the only one who survives. Or so he thinks.
Three years later, librarian and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan takes a look at an odd puzzle box her brother found. Along with it is an map that could be dated back to the time of Pharaoh Seti I. Turns out, he stole it from a man at a local casbah. A man named O’Connell (hmmm…). Rick is in jail for some disorderly conduct and for being a deserter of the Foreign Legion. They manage to free him and he agrees to take them to Hamunaptra, along with the Warden of Cairo prison (as part of the deal that released O’Connell).
Along the way, they find out that they’re not the only ones interested in Hamunaptra. Led by Rick’s old Foreign Legion buddy Beni Gabor (apparently Rick wasn’t the only survivor of the battle), a group of four Americans are making the trek, also.
After several troubles (including a tangle with some mysterious warriors), the two groups finally reach Hamunaptra. Within two days, three of the American’s Arab diggers were killed by pressurized acid (an ancient booby-trap), the Americans discover some weird old jars and a large black book, the Warden is killed by a scarab-beetle, and our three heroes (Rick, Evelyn, and Evelyn’s brother Jonathan) find the mummified corpse of Imhotep.
Evelyn accidentally brings Imhotep back to life and he begins coming after all of them. Rick, Evelyn, Jonathan, and an unlikely new friend must figure out a way to stop Imhotep before he takes over the world.

The Good
Movie- This is a great popcorn movie. It’s exciting, sometimes scary, and just generally fun. The special effects are quite amazing as well. Definitely something to take a look at.
Novel- This is one of the better novel versions of a movie that I’ve read. It captures the movie’s pace quite faithfully, and the scenes that it has that the movie doesn’t are rather cool.

The Bad
Movie- There isn’t much not to like here.
Novel- This version of the story alters some of the movie’s best lines, which make it slightly distracting. And the author came off as a bit of a sexist to me, but don’t quote me on that. One thing that did get on my nerves was the author’s use of the term "poor bastard." Now, I normally don’t mind swearing in novels, but when the same term is used over and over and over again, it tends to get grating. Especially when the term is used at least once a chapter.

The Ugly
Movie- Imhotep’s decayed corpse. Ug.
Novel- Trying to find this. I looked at every used book store in Macomb County and could not find it. I had to go through my local library.

Best Line
Movie: (When Rick first sees Beni alive)
Rick: Well, if it ain’t my little buddy Beni. I think I’ll kill you. (points revolver at Beni’s chest)
Beni: Think of my children!
Rick: You don’t have any children.
Beni: Someday I might.

Novel: (When Evelyn asks Rick why he kissed her before he was hanged)
Rick: Hell, every prisoner gets a last meal, doesn’t he?

Praise be to the computer gods!

Hey, I got my computer back! No, I won't be able to work on 24AU just yet. You see, they had to do a destructive restore on the computer, which means they wipe everything on the computer back to factory defaults. No worries, though. I backed up my files to CD before I took the computer in, but it's gonna be a few days before I get back to working on them.

In other news, some f'ing prick decided to check books out to me on my library record when not only was I not at the library, but the library I work at was closed. So tonight I have to go to the main library to kick some ass and find out why I have books on my record that I never checked out. I wasn't even in this city when they were checked out to me! For that matter, they're not even books of a type that I read. They're African American fiction--books specifically for African Americans. Nothing against them or anything, but I am a pale white guy who likes science fiction. Trust me, these are not books I would ever normally read. Eh, well. Considering that I am an employee of this library, as is my Aunt (not bragging, but she is one of the most respected and well-liked members of the library staff at Main), I don't see this as being a big problem.

In other news....some people died, some people survived, someone got imprisoned, and someone got freed. That's life.

(24AUN) Status 3/30

Got the computer back. Can't work on 24:AU yet (see my blog for the reason). Will soon. Gotta go. Bye bye.

Computer Repair

Finally getting my computer repaired. Too much malware on it. :( As a result, I won't be posting for a couple of days. I know. You're depressed. Until I have a repaired computer, this is JackBauer24.

(24AUN) Status 3/26

If you read my blog, then you probably know that I had to take my computer into the shop for repairs. Due to this, I can't work on 24:AU. It's weird. For the first time in over a year, I can't work on it, and it's a very strange feeling. I'll probably get back to work later this week, after I get the computer back and all set up.

Movie Quick Review: The People Vs. Larry Flynt

The People vs. Larry Flynt

This is a surprisingly good look into the life of Hustler magazine editor-in-chief Larry Flynt. It really drives home the point that you do not have to like the man or his magazine, but you can appreciate his message. Harrelson does an Oscar-worthy job in this role, especially after a fanatic's bullet paralyzes Flynt and transforms his life. It's an excellent performance. Keep an eye out for the real Flynt in a deliciously ironic role.

3.5/5

Updates and crap.

If you read my last post about me being mentioned on D&D, then you'll appreciate this: I am now responsible for a whole segment of their show. Last week, I e-mailed them a website that I got from the fan forums for 97.1. It's a site that shows the ranks of common names over the past century. They ended up spending about 20 minutes on monday playing around with it on the air! I'm just bursting with pride!

In other news, I spent two excruciating hours yesterday watching speeches for my job. Not only was the recording of the speeches terrible, but it seemed to me that none of the people giving speeches knew what they were doing. I'm in a speech class now, and I just winced through the whole thing at every elementary mistake they made. Ah, well. It all turned out okay. My aunt took me out for pizza right after, so all was good. (shameless plug- Z's Place in Detroit! Great pizza!).

I am now in my last few hours of work for the week. Thanks in part to Easter, I have a three-day weekend to look forward to. It's gonna be fun.

(24AUN) Kickin ass and takin names!

I've been working more and more on the show lately. I decided that to create a complete outline for the show is a bit futile, so I've begun work on the complete, final script. That's right. I've already got about thirty minutes of the show, almost exactly in the form that you will see when I post it. Later this week, I'll post a new preview to whet your appetite.

REALLY COOL

HEY! I got mentioned on D&D today! I had e-mailed them about the 24 video game a while ago, and Doyle mentioned my e-mail. He even mentioned me as an e-mailer named "Jack Bauer," which is my e-mail name. I nearly ran my car off the freeway when I heard that!

Video Game Review: Star Wars: Republic Commando (Xbox)

Republic Commando
XBOX
First-person squad-based shooter

What's it about?
You are the leader of a four-man squad of Clone Commandos. You are the Navy SEALS of the Clone Army. You go in, you perform high-stress, high-difficulty missions, and you come out with a joke to tell your buddies.

When does it take place?
Part one takes place during the Battle of Geonosis (from Episode II). Part two about a year later, and part three literally moments before Episode III begins.

Well, is it fun?
Hell, yeah! It's a lot of fun. You get to take care of every enemy the Separatists can throw at you--battle droids, droidekas, super battle droids, Trandoshan slavers, etc. You've got a full arsenal of weapons, each with its own interesting results.

Is it deep?
Are any first-person shooters? Seriously, the squad element makes for a whole new level of gameplay. What's interesting is that you find yourself actually caring about Sev, Scorch, and Fixer, so when they go down in battle, you will want to save them.

What's the replay value?
Moderate. The problem is that the missions are pretty linear, as is the gameplay. For example, after I beat it, I went back to have some fun. I tried killing Sev, Scorch, and Fixer, but every time I took out two of them, the third took me out. While this is interesting, it's not really flexible.

What's the difficulty?
Easy. I played it on Easy difficulty the first time around and breezed through it in two days. Maybe I'm spoiled by the 30/40 hour plus games of KOTOR, but I was kinda expecting a longer game.

Overall?
It's fun to play, but doesn't offer too much in flexibility. Wookiee are thrown in at the end for some interesting switch-ups, but otherwise it's pretty linear. Still, shooter fans and Star Wars fans alike will find something to like here.

4 out of 5

Really cool site.

Check out www.davo.com. It's my Uncle's website. Seriously!

Regarding my Trailer Description

Since I typed that description up the other day, I've seen a real trailer description typed by someone who already knows the movie quite well. Turns out that a lot of my trailer description was off. But mine is still more detailed than his! *pouts*

If you want to see a real trailer description, go to www.theforce.net . They've got it posted there.

Got nothing done....AGAIN!

You know, for the past two Sundays, I've sworn to get something done. Instead, I've spend the last two Sundays playing Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (respectively). Damn. I've just gotta buckle down and get to work, but it's so hard! Eh, well. There's always next Sunday. *impish grin*

(24AUN) Status 3/14

Hey, I'm back. After quite a long time of not working on 24AU, I realized that I HAVE to work on it. At this point, I don't have any other choice. So I am for now back working on it actively. Wish me luck!

The REAL Episode III Trailer

Last night, the real trailer for Revenge of the Sith came out. It was awesome. As a service to my faithful readers (riiiight - Editor), I typed up a major summary of the trailer. It's not perfect, but here it is.

Okay, Star Wars fans. It took a lot of time and patience to sit down and do this, but here is a complete, detailed summary of every shot in the new Revenge of the Sith trailer that I wrote. Be forewarned, though. I’m sure there are plenty of spoilers here.

Before I get started, let me say that there are two different versions of Palpatine in this trailer. The first is a normal-looking Palpatine, much like we saw in AOTC. The other is a cloaked and twisted Palpatine, looking much like his ROTJ form. For the sake of this summary (and my sanity), I will call the first Palpatine, and the second Sidious (because, come on, was there ever any doubt they were one and the same?).

1: Coruscant- Space:
An Imperial shuttle precursor and three pre-TIE fighters fly by screen. I’m told this shuttle carries the broken and burned body of Anakin Skywalker after The Duel.

2: Coruscant- Senate:
An exterior shot of the a large mushroom-shaped building. I’m reasonably certain this is the Senate building, but not completely.

3: Coruscant- Chancellor Palpatine’s quarters.
Palpatine speaks to Anakin.
Palpatine: The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.

4: Coruscant- Chancellor Palpatine’s office.
Continuation of 3. Close on Anakin.
Anakin: Is it possible to learn this power?

5: See #3
Palpatine: Not from a Jedi.

6: Coruscant- Exterior
Some kind of shuttle or skycar zooms by camera. Obi-Wan voice-over
Obi-Wan: The council...

7: Coruscant- Jedi Temple
Obi-Wan and Anakin walk down a flight of steps. Obi-Wan voice-over continues.
Obi-Wan: ...wants you to report...

8: Coruscant- Jedi Temple
Same as 7, but close on Obi and Anakin at the bottom of the steps.
Obi-Wan: ...on all...

9: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Palpatine stands up from his chair. Someone (Mace Windu?) in Jedi robes is in the foreground.
Obi-Wan: ...the Chancellor’s doings.

10: Unknown Planet
One of Grievous’s guard droids walks forward, flanked by battle droids. Anakin voice-over continues conversation from before.
Anakin: That’s treason.

11: Coruscant- Jedi Temple
(Possibly in the Council chamber?) Obi-Wan and Anakin stand in front of Temple window.
Obi-Wan: We are at war, Anakin.

12: Coruscant- Battle of Coruscant- Space
Two capital ships battle.

13: Coruscant- Capital ship
A Republic capital ship. A clone runs toward a giant cannon as an explosion destroys it.

14: Coruscant- Capital ship
Closer shot. The explosion sends clones flying.

15: Coruscant?- Some kind of theatre.
In an arena box at some kind of theatre, Anakin joins Palpatine, Mas Amedda, and some of the advisors. The entertainment, several giant purple blobs, float in front of them. Mace Windu voice-over.
Mace: Very dangerous, putting them...

16: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Palpatine puts his arm around Anakin and starts to lead him toward the entrance. Mace’s voice-over continues.
Mace: ...together. I don’t think the boy can handle it.

17: Coruscant- Gunship zooming through city.
Mace and Obi-Wan talk aboard a gunship zooming through the Coruscant night. A clone stands behind them. Mace’s line is continued from 15 and 16.
Mace: I don’t trust him.

18: Coruscant- Battle of Coruscant
Two claw-shaped fighters, flying near to camera, fire at something.

19: Coruscant- Battle of Coruscant
Another fighter (Republic) explodes from the shots fired in 18.

20: Coruscant- Battle of Coruscant
Wider shot. The fighter explodes and the debris shoots near camera. The pilot tumbles through the debris.

21: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Close on Palpatine.
Palpatine: I need your help, son.

22: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Continued from 21, close on Anakin.
Palpatine: I’m appointing you...

23: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office
Continued from 21 and 22. Palpatine starts to walk and Anakin follows.
Palpatine: ...to be my personal representative...

24: Coruscant- Jedi Temple- Council Chamber
Anakin stands in front of the council. In the foreground sit Saesee Tiin and Kit Fisto. In the background (clockwise) sit Agen Kolar (I think. The shot is kinda far away), Obi-Wan, a holographic Ki Adi Mundi, Yoda, Mace Windu, a holographic Plo Koon. Palpatine’s voice over continues, followed by a separate voice over by Mace Windu.
Palpatine: ...on the Jedi Council.
Mace: You’re on this council, but...

25: Coruscant- Jedi Temple- Council Chamber
Close on Mace Windu.
Mace: ...we do not grant you the rank of Master.

26: Coruscant- Jedi Temple- Council Chamber
Close on Anakin
Anakin: What?

27: Coruscant- Jedi Temple- Council Chamber
Close on Obi-Wan. Anakin voice-over.
Anakin: Obi-Wan and the council...

28: Coruscant- Padme’s apartment.
Anakin talking to Padme.
Anakin: ...don’t trust...

29: Coruscant- Padme’s apartment
Close on Padme
Anakin: ...me.

30: Coruscant- Capital ship
Clone trooper fires a giant cannon.

31: Coruscant- Capital ship
Another cannon explodes, destroying battle droids.

32: Coruscant- Palpatine’s hiding place.
Anakin stands in front of a window as the Battle of Coruscant continues behind him.
Palpatine: Learn to know the dark side...

33: Coruscant- Padme’s Apartment
Anakin, shirtless with a vest on and Padme in a blue dress in her apartment.
Palpatine: ...of the Force and you will achieve...

34: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Palpatine, pissed, talking to Anakin.
Palpatine: ...a power greater than any Jedi.

35: Coruscant- Palpatine’s hiding place.
Anakin raises his ignited lightsaber.

36: Coruscant- Palpatine’s hiding place.
With Battle of Coruscant raging in background, Anakin attacks Dooku with his lightsaber. Palpatine sits in the back in his giant chair.

37: Coruscant- Palpatine’s hiding place.
Anakin swings his blue saber down on Dooku’s.

38: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Palpatine’s doors open to reveal Mace Windu, Kit Fisto, Saesee Tiin, and Agen Kolar entering.

39: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Closer shot of 38. The Jedi ignite their sabers.
Mace: You’re under arrest, Chancellor.

40: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Close on Palpatine in his chair.
Palpatine: Are you threatening me, Master Jedi?

41: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Close on Palpatine’s right hand. A saber jumps out of his cloak and into it.

42: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Saber lit, Palpatine charges the Jedi.

43: Coruscant- Palpatine’s office.
Mace backs up and raises his saber.

44: Utapau?
A ship zooms away from a green planet. I think it’s either Utapau or Alderaan.

45: Unknown planet.
Dozens of battle droids, super battle droids, and droidekas close in on Obi-Wan. Nearby, a group of figures cluster together. I believe they are Grievous’s guards.

46: Coruscant: Battle of Coruscant
A destroyed capital ship falls toward the camera. A pre-Star Destroyer is above. Can’t tell if it’s an Acclamator.

47: Coruscant?
Bail Organa leans over some kind of speeder. Blue blaster bolts shoot in his direction, far from him.
Bail: No!

48: Utapau
A Jedi Starfighter zooms to the Utapauan surface.

49: Unknown
Anakin hangs on to a ledge in a deep shaft. Something big falls through the shaft below him.

50: Mustafar
A volcano surrounded by lava.

51: Utapau
Grievous, near his ship, punches at Obi-Wan.

52: Kashyyyk-

C-3PO and Padme stand on the balcony.
C-3PO: I feel so helpless.

76: Coruscant- Battle of Coruscant

Episode III Trailer Update

Okay, so the link I gave, to danielbroadway, no longer works. Instead, go to http://www.theforce.net/fanfilms/trailers/ep3pixelmagic/index.asp

Monday, March 07, 2005

EWWWW!

Something happened today at work that I thought was completely disgusting. There was a guy in the back of the library reading a book, and he was cutting his nails while he sat there. That's really gross! I mean, how can you justify that? What, your bathroom isn't good enough? You gotta come here and spread your waste?! Jeez.

Movie Review: The Big Lebowski

The Big Lebowski (1998)
Rated R
Directed by: Joel Coen
Starring: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi

The Story: When a stoner (Bridges) is mistaken for a millionaire, he finds himself swept up in a series of events manipulated by everyone around him--everyone but him.

The Good: I have to admit that the acting of this movie is pretty good (especially Goodman). It makes the movie worth watching, because the plot sure doesn't. Still, I laugh every time I hear the line "shut the fuck up, Donnie!"

The Bad: The plot here is pretty dumb, and the protagonist is not someone you can root for; he's got no drive, no future, all he cares about is bowling and getting stoned. While some of my readers may enjoy that life (then again, that's assuming I actually HAVE readers), I don't think it makes for the best film character.

The Ugly: The dream sequences of this film are like a bad drug trip.

My Rating: 3/5

Heh...got nothin done.

I SWORE to myself that I would get homework done today. I SWORE it! Instead, I played Knights of the Old Republic all day. Ah, well. There's always tomorrow.

Wow. I need to update more.

Can't believe it's been almost a month since I last posted. I have to work on that. No big news right now, but I do have a new website for Star Wars fans to check out: www.danielbroadway.com I'm not even gonna say what it is. Just check it out.

(24AUN) Status 3/03

Wow. Hadn't realized it's been almost a month since I posted. Well, I have been working on the series, just not as much as I'd like because of school, work, and other issues. I'm on the outline for ep 7 now, and I'd like to say I'm booking on it. I'd also like to say that I'm hung like a bear and getting laid every day, but let's face it, that just ain't happening. I work on the series as I can, but it's going SLOOOOWW.
